The R+V Insurance company has reported a significant rise in costs associated with natural disaster damages, attributed to the ongoing effects of climate change. In its annual financial report, the Wiesbaden-based insurance provider highlighted that the trend of increasing claims due to natural events has continued into 2024.
Despite the absence of major catastrophic events like the Ahr Valley flood, the insurance sector has noted a steady increase in claims during what is considered an average year. The report revealed that the total volume of claims related to natural disasters reached EUR442 million in 2024, up from EUR391 million the previous year. R+V's management pointed to incidents such as the heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg during the summer as significant contributors to this increase.
Moreover, the overall expense incurred by the R+V Insurance in the area of property and casualty insurance rose by 3.9% to EUR5.5 billion, significantly influenced by persistent inflationary pressures. The rising costs of repairs and replacement parts have been particularly evident in the automobile insurance sector, which remains the largest segment of the company's offerings.
R+V concluded the 2024 fiscal year with a pre-tax profit of EUR1.3 billion, surpassing the prior year's figure of EUR933 million, thanks in part to favorable investment outcomes. Additionally, the company reported a 2.8% increase in domestic premium income, bringing the total to EUR16 billion. The workforce of R+V also expanded, with approximately 720 new hires, resulting in a total of 18,392 employees.
As climate change continues to reshape the landscape of risk and insurance, companies like R+V face new challenges in managing the financial implications of environmental events. The ongoing rise in claims could lead to adjustments in underwriting practices and premium pricing as insurers work to mitigate their exposure to these increasingly frequent and severe weather-related incidents.
