Russia Threatens to Counter NATO Military Exercises

Wed 14th May, 2025

In a significant escalation of tensions, Russia has announced plans to take action against NATO military exercises currently taking place in Lithuania. The announcement was made by Alexander Grushko, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister, who characterized the drills as a direct threat to Russian security.

The NATO exercise, named Strong Shield 5, is being conducted in the central Lithuanian region of Panevezys from May 12 to May 18. Additionally, Lithuania is set to host another large-scale NATO exercise, Thunder Fortress 2025, from May 13 to May 27, which will involve approximately 8,000 soldiers, along with numerous ships and aircraft.

Grushko indicated that Russia views these military maneuvers as a means of deterrence against its interests, suggesting that they are designed to prepare NATO for potential military conflicts. He stated that Russia would take necessary measures to neutralize what he described as aggressive actions by NATO, asserting that the Russian military is closely monitoring the situation.

In response to the ongoing NATO activities, Grushko mentioned plans to deploy a tank corps near the Karelia region, which borders Finland, to counter NATO's presence. This action reflects Russia's broader strategy to enhance its military readiness in the face of perceived threats from the alliance.

The Kremlin has repeatedly accused NATO of adopting an aggressive posture and stoking tensions in the region. This comes at a time when Russia is already engaged in a protracted conflict with Ukraine, having invaded the country in February 2022 and previously annexed Crimea and other territories in eastern Ukraine.

In light of the heightened threat from Russia, many European nations are responding by increasing their defense budgets and modernizing their armed forces. The Baltic states--Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania--have been on high alert since the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, with historical ties to the Soviet Union contributing to their security concerns.

To bolster defense capabilities against potential Russian aggression, plans are underway to establish a Baltic defense line aimed at strengthening the eastern borders shared with Belarus and Russia. Lithuania also borders the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, and measures have been put in place, such as the closure of a bridge connecting Lithuania to Kaliningrad, to enhance national security.

Furthermore, contingency plans for relocating a portion of the Lithuanian population in the event of a conflict with Russia have been developed, underscoring the seriousness with which the country is treating the current geopolitical climate.
