Robbers Escape After ATM Explosion Disrupts Shopping Center in Plauen

In a shocking incident that occurred late Saturday night, an ATM belonging to Commerzbank was blown up by unidentified assailants at a shopping complex in Plauen, Saxony, causing significant damage to the surrounding area. The explosion, which took place between 2:00 and 2:20 AM, resulted in the temporary closure of several businesses, including a Kaufland supermarket and nearby establishments such as a pharmacy, bakery, and butcher shop.

Authorities reported that the perpetrators accessed the premises through a staff entrance before detonating the ATM, leading to extensive structural damage to the building. Following the explosion, the suspects fled the scene without being apprehended. The shopping center, popular among local residents in the Haselbrunn district, remains cordoned off as cleanup efforts are underway.

A spokesperson for Kaufland mentioned that they are aiming to reopen as soon as possible, although no specific time frame has been provided. In the early hours of the morning, access to the premises was restricted while a structural engineer from the Technical Relief Agency (THW) assessed the safety of the heavily damaged areas.

The explosion has affected not only retail spaces but also restrooms and interior walls. The exact amount of cash stolen during the incident remains unclear, with police stating that the culprits managed to escape with an undisclosed sum. Currently, there are no leads on the identities of the suspects, but authorities are actively reviewing witness statements and surveillance footage.
