Increase in Crimes Against Train Employees and Federal Police

Sat 31st May, 2025

In recent years, the safety of employees working for the Deutsche Bahn and federal police officers has come under increasing threat, as evidenced by rising crime statistics. Reports indicate that incidents of assault, threats, and resistance against these workers have escalated significantly.

Data released by the Federal Ministry of the Interior highlights that in the previous year, a total of 3,151 employees from Deutsche Bahn and affiliated service providers reported crimes such as bodily harm and threats. This marks an increase from approximately 2,800 cases in 2022 and about 2,750 in 2023. The figures are compiled based on the Police Incoming Statistics, which categorize crimes as they are reported to law enforcement, suggesting there may be additional unreported incidents.

It is important to consider that 2024 was a unique year due to the UEFA European Championship, which resulted in a surge of passengers using train services for a prolonged period. This influx likely contributed to the heightened number of reported incidents.

On a broader scale, the federal police have also experienced a surge in assaults. The number of federal police officers reported as victims rose to 10,726 last year, compared to 9,641 in 2023 and 8,125 in 2022. Early data from the first four months of this year suggests this trend is continuing, with 3,879 incidents recorded thus far. These statistics encompass threats and physical attacks on police personnel, as well as instances of resistance during their duties.

In light of these alarming statistics, concerns are being voiced regarding the growing perception of train workers and police officers as targets for violence. A prominent political figure has expressed dismay over this trend, indicating that societal attitudes towards these professionals appear to be deteriorating. The official is calling for the Federal Minister of the Interior to present a strategic plan aimed at reducing such crimes before the summer recess.

As the situation evolves, it remains crucial for authorities to address the safety of those who serve in public roles, ensuring that they are protected from violence and aggression while performing their duties.
