In the wake of a catastrophic 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar, relief efforts are facing significant obstacles. The regions affected are in dire need of assistance as local residents work tirelessly amidst challenging conditions, according to a representative from a prominent aid organization.
Reports indicate that families are sifting through rubble in search of missing loved ones, while many have resorted to sleeping outdoors on mats without any shelter. The situation is dire, with estimates suggesting that approximately nine million individuals have been severely impacted by the disaster. The local director of the Welthungerhilfe organization highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that many bodies remain trapped under debris.
With temperatures soaring to around 42 degrees Celsius, there is an increasing risk of disease outbreaks, which poses a threat to both the affected individuals and the rescuers. Due to the delayed arrival of professional rescue teams, many of the relief efforts are being conducted by local volunteers, often referred to as "sandals rescuers," a term reflecting the common footwear in the region.
The aftermath of the earthquake has led many individuals to seek refuge in monasteries, a traditional safe haven in Myanmar during emergencies. Additionally, some have fled to open fields, including football pitches, to avoid the risk of collapsing buildings. While makeshift tent cities have started to emerge in some areas, a significant number of people are left without proper shelter, laying on mats surrounded by salvaged belongings.
As the crisis unfolds, stories of affected individuals are emerging. For instance, a 16-year-old girl named Yoon May, who has been relocated to a field in Mandalay, described her plight. With no access to water or electricity and only a mosquito net for protection, she expressed her deep sorrow over the loss of her pre-exam celebration plans.
Government offices in Naypyitaw, the capital, have also suffered extensive damage, forcing employees to continue their work in parking lots, where they are also sleeping. The challenges faced by aid organizations are compounded by the destruction of infrastructure, including roads and bridges, which hampers access to the worst-hit areas. Travel times have significantly increased, with journeys that typically take eight to nine hours now stretching to almost 27 hours due to traffic congestion and military checkpoints.
Myanmar has been grappling with ongoing civil unrest, and the military's control over the country complicates the relief efforts. There is hope that the military government will allow humanitarian assistance teams waiting in neighboring Thailand to enter the country. The need for financial support from the international community is pressing, with estimates suggesting that hundreds of millions of euros will be required in the coming months to address the needs of those affected.
