The German Red Cross (DRK) has announced a special blood donation drive scheduled for April 19, coinciding with the Easter holiday period. This initiative aims to ensure that blood supply levels are sufficient in Berlin and Brandenburg, as these regions often face a shortage of blood during this time.
According to the DRK Blood Donation Service for North-East Germany, blood has a limited shelf life, making it crucial to maintain adequate reserves for medical emergencies. During the Easter holidays, the demand for blood donations typically increases, as many regular donors are often away.
A DRK spokesperson emphasized the importance of continuous donations, stating that around 600 blood donations are required on a daily basis to meet the healthcare needs of patients in the region. This special event on Karsamstag (Holy Saturday) presents an excellent opportunity for first-time donors to contribute.
Individuals interested in donating blood can visit several designated locations in Berlin and Brandenburg on April 19. In Berlin, donations can be made at the DRK Blood Donation Center located in Lichterfelde, while additional sites across Brandenburg include Cottbus, Neuruppin, Beelitz, Königs Wusterhausen, and Herzberg. The Cottbus center will be open for donations from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM, while the other locations will operate from 9 AM to 1 PM. The DRK encourages potential donors to book an appointment in advance to guarantee their time slot.
Furthermore, the DRK has emphasized that blood donations will be needed not just during the Easter holiday but also in the days that follow, as this will help ensure that blood reserves remain stable throughout the holiday period.
Healthy individuals aged 18 and older are eligible to donate blood. Before each donation, a medical examination is conducted to assess the donor's suitability on that specific day. Men are permitted to donate up to six times a year, while women can donate up to four times. Notably, individuals with allergies can also participate in blood donation, provided they are symptom-free and are not using corticosteroids or undergoing hyposensitization treatments.
