Approximately 2 million baked goods are being recalled due to concerns over potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, as reported by federal safety officials.
The recall was initiated on January 7, 2025, and subsequently escalated to a Class II recall on February 5, according to reports from reputable news sources. The manufacturer, FGF Brands, which distributes various baked items across the United States and Canada, stated that the voluntary recall is a precautionary measure stemming from non-product-related findings at one of its doughnut production facilities. They emphasized that no doughnuts or food contact surfaces tested positive for listeria.
FGF Brands clarified that the recall process was completed in early January and does not involve any products currently or recently available on the market. The affected products include a variety of items such as chocolate, raspberry, and Bavarian doughnuts, French crullers, eclairs, and coffee rolls. Some of these goods were sold at Dunkin' and were manufactured before December 13, 2024. As of now, no specific source of contamination has been identified.
Listeria is a bacterium that can cause listeriosis, which is recognized as the third leading cause of death associated with foodborne illnesses in the United States. Symptoms of this infection may include fever, muscle aches, and fatigue, with more severe manifestations such as a stiff neck, headache, confusion, or seizures potentially occurring.
Particularly vulnerable populations include older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with compromised immune systems. Listeria poses significant risks for pregnant women, potentially resulting in pregnancy loss, premature birth, or severe infections in newborns.
For consumers who may have purchased these recalled products, it is advisable to avoid consumption and dispose of any affected items to mitigate health risks associated with listeriosis.
