Rare Celestial Event: Planetary Alignment Visible in Night Sky

Thu 20th Feb, 2025

Stargazers are in for a treat in the coming days as a rare celestial display presents an opportunity to view all the planets in our solar system from Earth, provided the weather cooperates. According to experts, the best chance to observe this phenomenon will occur on Tuesday, February 25, shortly after sunset.

During this event, the planets will not appear in a straight line as one might expect, but rather will be distributed across a wide area of the sky in what is referred to as a great circle. Notably, the planets will be positioned on the same side of the Sun from the perspective of Earth, making this rare alignment possible.

As the sun sets, Mercury and Saturn will be closely situated just above the horizon. Slightly higher, the elusive Neptune will be visible, and shining brightly above it will be Venus. Jupiter can be spotted in the southern sky, while Uranus lies a hand's breadth west of Jupiter, and the distinctive red planet Mars will be found to the east of Jupiter.

Observers hoping to catch a glimpse of Uranus and Neptune will likely need binoculars or a telescope due to their faintness, alongside a star map to help navigate the starry backdrop. The unique visibility of these planets is attributed to their alignment on the same side of the Sun relative to Earth.

It is crucial for viewers to choose a location with an unobstructed view to the west since Mercury and Saturn will be positioned low on the horizon. Even after these planets fade from sight, the three brightest planets--Venus, Jupiter, and Mars--will still provide a stunning visual display in the night sky. Adding to this spectacle, the crescent moon will join the scene starting on March 1, appearing between Mercury and Venus.
