Three major rail associations in Germany are calling for a permanent implementation of the Germany Ticket, alongside the development of a unified ticketing application and simplified fare structures across the country. They announced these proposals during a recent meeting in Fulda, emphasizing the need for significant improvements in public transport.
The associations--the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV), the Federal Association of Local Rail Transport (BSN), and the mofair association representing private rail operators--stress that these changes hinge on ensuring long-term financial stability and a reliably functioning infrastructure.
In a joint appeal to the upcoming federal government, the associations highlighted the importance of robust and attractive mobility options in achieving lasting climate protection and fostering societal inclusion. They provided concrete suggestions for reorganizing public transport services to enhance efficiency.
This initiative comes in response to recent statements from politicians, particularly within the Union party, who have raised concerns about the financing of the Germany Ticket post-2026. Notably, the Union's electoral program does not include any mention of the ticket.
The VDV President indicated that the industry is ready to undertake necessary structural reforms in exchange for a reliable, long-term funding commitment for the Germany Ticket, expansion of public transport offerings, and modernization efforts. This commitment is seen as a crucial step towards achieving the proposed enhancements.
The associations proposed reducing the number of ticketing applications currently in use and introducing a neutral, nationwide app to streamline the ticket purchasing process. Furthermore, they aim to simplify the complex fare structures that currently exist among different transport networks.
One of the suggested approaches involves replacing existing small and large transport associations with new, leaner organizational units that align more closely with state boundaries. These new units would encourage stronger cooperation with local municipalities.
To address the high levels of planning, ordering, and operational effort presently required, the associations are advocating for the establishment of uniform standards across the nation. While such standardization has already been achieved in bus and tram operations, there remains untapped potential in other areas of local rail transport and related contractual processes.
For these proposals to be realized, however, they will require political endorsement and legislative action. A representative from BSN expressed optimism about the discussions, stating that the rail associations have extended a collaborative hand and are prepared to engage in a constructive dialogue to shape the future of rail transport in Germany.
