Link Between Psoriasis and Sleep Disorders Revealed

Tue 3rd Jun, 2025

Recent research has established a significant connection between psoriasis and an increased likelihood of experiencing sleep disorders. A study published in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (JEADV) Clinical Practice has highlighted the prevalence of sleep issues among individuals suffering from both mild and moderate-to-severe forms of psoriasis.

The investigation, led by a team from the College of Medicine at the University of Florida, analyzed data from 7,743 adult psoriasis patients sourced from the All of Us database. Participants were matched with controls based on age, sex, and race/ethnicity at a ratio of 1:4. The results indicated that even mild psoriasis was notably linked to conditions such as restless leg syndrome, insomnia, and obstructive sleep apnea after accounting for various sociodemographic factors and existing health conditions.

The association becomes even more pronounced in cases of moderate-to-severe psoriasis. Interestingly, the study revealed that the risk of developing sleep disorders was further heightened among non-White patients, particularly in relation to insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea.

The authors of the study emphasized the importance of recognizing these disparities within a nationally diverse population. They advocate for tailored, culturally sensitive strategies in the clinical management of psoriasis and its related comorbidities. However, they also acknowledged certain limitations of the study, including the reliance on electronic health records which may lead to potential diagnostic misclassification.

Additionally, several authors of the study have disclosed affiliations with the biopharmaceutical industry, which raises considerations regarding the influence of external interests on research outcomes.

This emerging link between psoriasis and sleep disorders underscores the necessity for healthcare providers to consider the broader implications of psoriasis treatment. A comprehensive approach that addresses both skin health and sleep quality could significantly enhance patient outcomes.

For further details, the study titled 'The Association of Psoriasis With Sleep Disorders in a Diverse National Cohort' is available in the JEADV Clinical Practice journal.
