Primark CEO Resigns Following Misconduct Allegations

Mon 31st Mar, 2025

Paul Marchant, the chief executive officer of the fashion retailer Primark, has stepped down from his position effective immediately. This decision comes in the wake of allegations made by a woman claiming that Marchant exhibited inappropriate behavior towards her. The parent company, Associated British Foods (ABF), released a statement on Monday confirming his resignation.

Marchant has reportedly cooperated with an investigation initiated by ABF and acknowledged that he made a 'misjudgment' in his actions. He admitted that his conduct did not align with the standards expected by the company.

George Weston, chairman of ABF, expressed disappointment over the situation, emphasizing the importance of upholding high integrity standards within the organization. He stated that responsible behavior is crucial for the long-term success and leadership of a company, and that all employees should be treated with respect and dignity. Weston underscored that the corporate culture must transcend individual actions.

Marchant's tenure at Primark began in 2009 when he joined as Chief Operating Officer. He took over the role of CEO later that same year, succeeding the company's founder, Arthur Ryan. Prior to his time at Primark, Marchant held various positions at well-known retailers such as Debenhams, Topman, River Island, and New Look.
