The city of Prague has introduced a remarkable new attraction: a state-of-the-art planetarium that promises to offer visitors an immersive experience of the cosmos. The recently renovated facility features a 22-meter dome equipped with approximately 45 million LEDs, creating stunning visuals of the night sky. Unlike traditional planetariums that utilize projectors, this innovative venue employs self-illuminating light sources to enhance the viewing experience.
The planetarium, located in the Stromovka park, has undergone extensive renovations over the past two years, culminating in its grand reopening to the public. According to the director of the facility, the new technology has left visitors in awe, marking it as one of the first fully digital LED planetariums globally.
The LED Dome lighting system, developed by an American manufacturer, boasts a long lifespan, low maintenance costs, and exceptional brightness. Moreover, the heat generated by the LED system will be utilized to heat the entire building during winter months, demonstrating a commitment to energy efficiency. The total cost of the renovation was approximately EUR12 million.
Originally constructed in the 1950s, the planetarium's circular structure has been updated to accommodate 290 guests. It has also preserved a piece of its history by retaining the original projection device from Carl Zeiss Jena, a renowned optical manufacturer from East Germany, in a dedicated exhibit space.
In the previous year, the city welcomed over a million overnight guests from Germany, highlighting its appeal as a tourist destination. With the new planetarium now open, Prague continues to enhance its cultural offerings, attracting both locals and visitors alike to explore the wonders of the universe.
