Prada Acquires Versace in Major Fashion Merger

Thu 10th Apr, 2025

The Italian fashion landscape is set for a significant transformation as Prada officially announces its acquisition of the renowned luxury brand Versace. This strategic move reflects the ongoing consolidation trend in the high-end fashion sector.

Founded in 1978 by the iconic designer Gianni Versace, the brand has been synonymous with Italian luxury and bold designs. In recent years, Versace operated under the ownership of Capri Holdings, a U.S.-based company that also manages other prestigious labels like Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo. The acquisition deal, valued at EUR1.25 billion, comes in lower than the previously speculated price of EUR1.5 billion.

Prada, a staple in the luxury fashion industry since its inception in 1913, has expanded its portfolio to include other high-end brands such as Miu Miu and Church's. The acquisition of Versace aligns with Prada's vision of strengthening its market position and expanding its influence in the luxury segment.

Speculation surrounding the acquisition had been rife for months, with reports indicating that there were some hurdles to overcome before the deal could be finalized. Concerns about potential tariffs imposed by the U.S. government under the previous administration also added uncertainty to the negotiations.

The change in ownership comes at a pivotal time for Versace, particularly following the recent departure of its long-time creative director, Donatella Versace, who transitioned to the role of Chief Brand Ambassador after nearly three decades of leading the brand's creative direction. Dario Vitale, previously associated with Miu Miu, has been appointed as the new creative head, marking a new era for the iconic fashion house.

As Prada integrates Versace into its business structure, industry analysts are keenly observing how this merger will reshape the competitive dynamics within the luxury fashion market. Both brands are celebrated for their rich heritage and commitment to quality, and their union is expected to create a powerhouse in the global fashion arena.
