Power and Water Supply Disrupted for 50,000 Households Near Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant

Fri 14th Feb, 2025

In a significant escalation of tensions surrounding the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, approximately 50,000 households in the occupied city of Enerhodar have experienced disruptions to their electricity and water supplies. This incident follows reports of artillery fire attributed to Ukrainian forces targeting the thermal power station adjacent to the nuclear facility.

According to Russian state media, the Ukrainian military executed 15 artillery strikes against the Zaporizhzhia thermal power station, resulting in the suspension of essential services in Enerhodar and the surrounding areas. The instability in the power grid has led to a temporary cessation of water supply, although some services have reportedly been restored.

Despite the localized impact, officials stated that the operations and safety of the nearby Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant have not been compromised. The facility, which has been under Russian control since March 2022, has been a focal point of conflict between Moscow and Kyiv, with both sides accusing each other of endangering the site through military actions.

International observers from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are stationed at the plant, monitoring its safety and security. Recently, plans for a rotation of IAEA experts were thwarted due to heightened military activity in the area, as noted by IAEA Director Rafael Grossi.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has raised alarms globally, particularly concerning the risks associated with military operations near nuclear sites. The Zaporizhzhia facility, being Europe's largest nuclear power plant, remains a critical concern for international safety and security agencies.

As the situation develops, the humanitarian impact on local residents continues to grow, with many families facing uncertainties regarding their access to basic utilities. Energy and water shortages in conflict zones are becoming increasingly prevalent, highlighting the dire consequences of ongoing hostilities.

Calls for a ceasefire and diplomatic solutions have become more urgent as the international community watches closely. The conflict's ramifications extend beyond immediate military concerns, affecting civilians and infrastructure crucial for daily life.
