Pope Francis has been admitted to the Policlinico Agostino Gemelli in Rome for treatment of a severe case of bronchitis. This decision follows over a week of battling respiratory issues that have hindered his public engagements. Despite his health concerns, the Pope had continued to hold private audiences, including a recent meeting with Slovakia's Prime Minister, Robert Fico, which was documented through photographs released by the Vatican.
During these public engagements, the Pope appeared visibly weakened. He was unable to read his prepared speeches at several recent events, including a Sunday service and a Wednesday general audience, instead relying on aides to deliver his messages. The pontiff has expressed difficulty speaking and has experienced shortness of breath.
The Vatican's press office indicated that the Pope's hospitalization is for necessary examinations and treatment of his ongoing bronchitis. This is not the first instance of health issues for the 88-year-old leader; he was hospitalized in February 2024 for similar respiratory examinations, and in June 2023, he underwent a significant abdominal surgery that required an extended hospital stay.
Despite his current illness, the Vatican has announced a busy schedule of public events for Pope Francis in the coming days. Planned activities include a Sunday Mass attended by various artists, filmmakers, and actors as part of the Holy Year celebrations. Additionally, the Pope is set to visit the famed Cinecittà film studios in Rome, marking a historic first for a pontiff.
Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, who oversees the Vatican's cultural department, shared that the main event at Cinecittà will be outdoors at the set of the series 'Roma Antica,' contingent on favorable weather conditions. Notable figures from the film industry, such as American director Tim Burton and actress Monica Bellucci, will participate in the Holy Year events, which have attracted over 10,000 artists from around the globe.
On Sunday evening, a special opening of St. Peter's Basilica will occur, allowing artists to enter through the Holy Door, a significant event that only takes place once every 25 years outside of Holy Years.
