Pollers Removed in Berlin-Friedrichshain Amid Traffic Concept Protests

Mon 14th Apr, 2025

A heated dispute has emerged in the Ostkreuz neighborhood of Berlin-Friedrichshain regarding the local traffic calming measures. Over the weekend, two traffic bollards were forcibly removed at the intersection of Niederbarnimstraße and Boxhagener Straße. This act has led to some motorists taking advantage of the absence of these barriers, resuming vehicle access through the street.

Residents of the area have expressed their discontent with the current traffic concept proposed by the Green Party, which aims to enhance pedestrian safety and reduce vehicular traffic in the neighborhood. In response to the removal of the bollards, community members have begun organizing efforts to fund a legal challenge against the implementation of the so-called Kiezblock, a local initiative designed to limit car access in certain parts of the area.

The situation has sparked significant discussion among residents, with opinions divided on the effectiveness and necessity of the proposed traffic measures. Supporters argue that the Kiezblock would create a more pedestrian-friendly environment, while opponents believe it restricts necessary access for drivers.

As the debate continues, community meetings are being scheduled to address the concerns of residents and to explore potential compromises that could satisfy both drivers and advocates for safer streets. The outcome of this situation may set a precedent for future traffic policies in urban neighborhoods across Berlin.
