Police Seize 550 Illegal Vapes in Hamburg Crackdown

Thu 6th Mar, 2025

In a recent operation, authorities in Hamburg have uncovered a significant cache of illegal vaping products. The police executed searches in the neighborhoods of St. Georg and Lohbrügge, targeting a kiosk and the residence of the 50-year-old kiosk owner suspected of selling non-compliant disposable e-cigarettes.

The investigation began after the Water Police received information indicating that the kiosk owner was allegedly distributing vaping products with excessive filling volumes and high concentrations of active substances. Furthermore, it is alleged that these products were sold to minors, raising serious concerns regarding public health and safety.

Since November of the previous year, the suspect has reportedly been involved in the sale of these illegal items. Following the accumulation of evidence, the relevant district court issued search warrants for both the kiosk located on Steindamm and the suspect's apartment.

On the afternoon of the operation, law enforcement officials, in collaboration with customs officers and representatives from the district office, carried out the searches. During this coordinated effort, they successfully confiscated nearly 550 illegal vaping devices, valued at approximately EUR8,000. Notably, a shipment containing additional e-cigarettes was received at the suspect's location during the execution of the search warrants.

In addition to the seized vaping products, authorities discovered around EUR22,000 in cash, believed to have been generated through illegal activities, within the suspect's residence. However, the suspect was released after the search due to a lack of grounds for detention.

The investigation led by the Water Police continues, focusing on potential violations of both tobacco product regulations and youth protection laws. Authorities are committed to addressing the challenges posed by illegal vaping products, particularly those that may endanger young individuals.
