Munich - The Eisbach wave, located in the English Garden, is renowned among surfers and tourists alike, yet it is also marked by significant dangers. On April 16, a tragic incident occurred when a 33-year-old surfer encountered difficulties while surfing. The woman was submerged underwater for approximately 30 minutes before rescuers managed to free her. Despite extensive medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries in the hospital one week later.
What remains perplexing is the reason her safety leash became entangled during the incident, preventing her from extricating herself. The circumstances surrounding this entanglement are currently unclear.
In response to the tragic event, a team of 50 police officers has been mobilized to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. The Munich I Public Prosecutor's Office is conducting an inquiry following a complaint filed by the surfer's partner, who suspects negligent homicide.
To facilitate the investigation, the water level of the Eisbach was lowered by over one meter. On Wednesday, four police divers entered the water to conduct their examination.
Utilizing specialized equipment, the divers focused on examining 'disturbance stones' at the riverbed. These stones are strategically placed to alter the flow direction and speed of the water, creating the necessary turbulence for the surf wave to form.
Authorities are exploring whether the surfer became trapped on these disturbance stones, which are integral to the wave's formation. During the investigation, a drone was employed to document the divers' efforts from above.
To avoid interference with the divers' work, the police shielded the disturbance stones with a funnel to capture underwater images. Investigators aim to determine if the surfer's leash became ensnared on these stones or if other foreign objects, such as e-scooters or large branches, contributed to the incident.
Officials are issuing strong warnings regarding the inherent risks of surfing on the Eisbach wave. As a precautionary measure, authorities have suspended surfing activities on this wave in Munich. Those who defy this ban may face fines of up to EUR50,000.
