Police Apprehend Pickpockets at Leipziger Platz in Berlin

Wed 26th Feb, 2025

In a recent incident at the Mall of Berlin, located at Leipziger Platz in the heart of Berlin-Mitte, local authorities apprehended three suspected pickpockets. These individuals are alleged to have stolen a substantial amount of cash, totaling in the four-digit range, from a 52-year-old victim.

The operation unfolded on a Tuesday afternoon when undercover officers observed the suspects actively seeking potential victims in the shopping center's dining area. The two 33-year-old men employed a collaborative strategy: one positioned himself at a table, facing away from the victim, while the other maintained a lookout nearby. This arrangement facilitated the theft as the man seated at the table discreetly removed items from the victim's jacket, which was draped over the chair.

Following the theft, the suspects attempted to flee the scene but were intercepted by law enforcement before reaching their vehicle. Upon searching the car, officers discovered the allegedly stolen cash, which was subsequently returned to the victim.

The suspects were taken into custody for identification verification and are scheduled to appear before a judge for potential arrest warrants.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding petty crime in Berlin, particularly in busy commercial areas. Just days prior, two other individuals were detained by federal police for stealing a smartphone from a woman at the Neukölln S-Bahn station. The theft was thwarted when the victim's daughter confronted the suspects on the platform, leading to their eventual apprehension by police.

As authorities continue to combat street crime, incidents like these serve as a reminder for citizens to remain vigilant and protect their belongings while in public spaces.
