A recent study published in the journal Menopause suggests that adopting a plant-based diet can significantly aid in weight loss and alleviate severe hot flashes among postmenopausal women. The research, conducted by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, highlights the positive impact of substituting animal products with plant-based foods, including both unprocessed and ultra-processed options that contain soybeans.
The study involved 84 postmenopausal women who reported experiencing two or more moderate-to-severe hot flashes daily. These participants were divided into two groups: one group followed a low-fat vegan diet that included a daily intake of half a cup of cooked soybeans, while the other maintained their regular dietary habits for a duration of 12 weeks. The results demonstrated a remarkable reduction in the frequency of severe hot flashes by 92% in the vegan group, contrasting with minimal changes observed in the control group.
Moreover, moderate-to-severe hot flashes decreased by 88% in the vegan group, whereas the control group experienced only a 34% reduction. In terms of body weight, participants following the vegan diet lost an average of approximately 8 pounds (3.6 kilograms), compared to a mere half pound (0.2 kg) in the control group.
The researchers further investigated whether the level of food processing affected the outcomes. Using the NOVA classification system, they categorized foods based on their processing levels. This system classifies food into four categories: unprocessed or minimally processed, processed ingredients, processed foods, and ultra-processed foods. The analysis revealed that participants in the vegan group consumed fewer animal products, which correlated with both weight loss and a decrease in hot flashes. Interestingly, the level of processing of plant foods did not significantly impact changes in weight or hot flash severity, indicating that the health benefits derived from increased plant food consumption are independent of how those foods are processed.
This study underscores the potential health benefits of a plant-based diet, particularly for postmenopausal women dealing with weight issues and severe hot flashes. The findings suggest that making dietary shifts away from animal products towards plant-based options can be a viable strategy for managing these symptoms effectively.
