PIA Restores Flights to Europe Following EU Safety Ban Lifting

Fri 10th Jan, 2025

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), the nation's state-run carrier, has recommenced its flights to Europe after the European Union lifted a four-year safety ban. The ban was initially imposed in 2020 following a tragic incident involving an Airbus A-320 that crashed in Karachi, resulting in the deaths of 97 individuals.

The EU's concerns regarding PIA's operational safety escalated when the former aviation minister revealed that a significant number of Pakistani pilots were involved in exam irregularities. This statement raised alarms about the airline's adherence to safety standards.

The lifting of the ban, which occurred in November, has been a significant relief for PIA, which reportedly suffered an annual revenue loss of nearly EUR146 million ($150 million) due to the restrictions imposed on its operations in Europe. The resumption of flights is expected to help recover some of these financial losses.

On January 10, 2025, the first flight from Islamabad to Paris took off, marking the airline's return to European skies. The flight was fully booked, carrying over 300 passengers. Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif officiated the launch of this service and indicated plans for PIA to expand its flight offerings to additional European destinations in the near future.

Asif attributed the initial ban to what he termed an 'irresponsible statement' made by the former aviation minister, suggesting that better communication and management could have prevented the situation.

Historically, PIA, which was established in 1955 following the nationalization of a struggling commercial airline, has faced various challenges, including safety incidents. One such incident occurred in 2016 when a PIA aircraft caught fire due to an engine failure, leading to 40 fatalities.

The airline currently operates flights to multiple domestic locations as well as destinations in the Gulf region and Southeast Asia. Amid ongoing discussions about its operational efficiency, the Pakistani government is exploring options to privatize PIA once again, a move aimed at restoring the airline's profitability and enhancing service quality.

As PIA resumes its European operations, the focus will be on ensuring that safety protocols are strictly followed to rebuild trust among passengers and regulatory bodies alike.
