Peak of Flu Season Likely Reached, According to RKI

Thu 20th Feb, 2025

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has indicated that Germany may have reached the peak of its flu season. Recent data shows that the number of reported cases of acute respiratory infections remained stable during the week of February 10-16, 2025, compared to the previous week. However, the overall level of illness remains elevated, with approximately 7.5 million individuals in Germany currently experiencing acute respiratory infections, many of whom are suffering from influenza.

The RKI reports that influenza cases are being documented across all age groups. In a positive development, hospitalizations due to acute respiratory infections have declined in most demographics. Notably, around one-third of these patients were admitted to hospitals due to severe influenza symptoms. While there has been a decrease in cases among school-aged children, the incidence of severe cases continues to be alarmingly high.

Health professionals are advising parents to consult a doctor if their child exhibits severe respiratory distress, refuses to eat, experiences persistent high fever, or shows signs of deteriorating general health.

In light of the ongoing health crisis, the RKI has issued recommendations for individuals exhibiting symptoms of acute respiratory infections. They advise that such individuals should remain at home for three to five days and until their symptoms show significant improvement. During this time, it is crucial to minimize close contact with others, particularly those at higher risk for severe illness, such as the elderly. Furthermore, individuals with respiratory symptoms are encouraged to wear a mask as a protective measure for those around them.

The RKI also suggests that anyone wishing to protect themselves from infection should consider wearing a face mask in indoor settings. Vaccinations against COVID-19, influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and pneumococcal infections should be administered in accordance with the guidance of the Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO).

As the flu wave continues, it is essential for the public to remain informed and take necessary precautions to safeguard their health and that of others.
