Over 6,300 Ukrainian Students Enrolled in Brandenburg Schools Amid Ongoing Conflict

Sat 22nd Feb, 2025

In Brandenburg, Germany, over 6,300 children and young adults from Ukraine are currently attending schools. This influx of students has been notable since the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine three years ago.

According to the Ministry of Education in Potsdam, the number of Ukrainian students reached 6,356 in November 2024, reflecting a significant increase from previous years. In the fall of 2023, the count stood at 5,933, and the year before that, it was 5,729. The highest number of Ukrainian student enrollments occurred in 2022, right after the conflict escalated, although subsequent years have seen a decrease in new enrollments.

Additionally, as of the latest reports, there are 137 teachers from Ukraine employed in Brandenburg schools, contributing to the educational needs of these students. The Ukrainian children are integrated into regular classes while also having access to preparatory groups and support courses tailored to their proficiency in the German language.

The education system in Brandenburg accommodates a total of over 300,000 students, with Ukrainian nationals being a significant demographic within that population. This adjustment underscores the ongoing educational and social challenges posed by the war, as families seek refuge and stability in Germany.

As the conflict continues, the integration of these students remains a priority for local authorities, who are tasked with providing adequate resources and support to ensure their successful adaptation to the new educational environment.
