Opportunities and Limitations in Mental Health Treatments

Thu 20th Feb, 2025

In Germany, approximately one in six individuals experiences mental health issues such as panic attacks, burnout, depression, or anxiety disorders, according to the Federal Health Survey (BGS). This statistic indicates a growing trend in mental health challenges, yet many face lengthy wait times--sometimes several months--when seeking therapy.

Currently, there are over fifty certified digital health applications (DiGAs) available, with nearly half specifically designed for mental health support. Maik Pommer, spokesperson for the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM), explains that insured individuals under the statutory health insurance system have the right to access DiGAs prescribed by physicians and psychotherapists, with costs covered by their health insurance provider. To be included permanently in the DiGA directory, providers must demonstrate a positive impact on patient care.

Whether a digital health application is suitable for an individual depends on the nature and severity of their mental health challenges. DiGAs are primarily intended for those experiencing mild to moderate mental distress, particularly those who are actively seeking to improve their condition. They can be particularly beneficial for individuals with less severe disorders or patients awaiting therapy, as these applications can help bridge the gap during waiting periods.

How to Access a DiGA

The process of obtaining a DiGA involves several steps:

  1. Prescription: Medical professionals issue a prescription for a specific application based on a diagnosis.
  2. Application Submission: Patients submit the prescription to their health insurance provider for review.
  3. Activation Code: Upon approval, patients receive a code from their insurer, allowing them to access the application.

Additionally, patients can apply directly to their health insurance provider for approval if there is already an existing indication for a DiGA.

New Developments in Digital Health Applications

Recently, two new programs have been added to the DiGA directory aimed at supporting individuals with depression: 'Edupression.com' and 'Elona Therapy Depression.' These applications are now available for prescription by healthcare providers.

Moreover, a second application has been introduced for patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), named 'Levidex,' which is also eligible for prescription. These advancements underline the ongoing expansion of digital health solutions in the mental health sector.

Currently, five DiGAs are available to assist individuals coping with anxiety disorders. These applications utilize cognitive behavioral therapy principles and targeted exposure techniques to help users confront and manage their fears.
