OpenAI Restructures Leadership to Focus on Global Expansion

Tue 25th Mar, 2025

OpenAI is undergoing a significant leadership transformation as the company shifts its focus toward global growth. Three key executive positions have been altered, while the role of Chief Technical Officer (CTO), previously held by Mira Murati, remains vacant.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has expressed a desire to concentrate more on overseeing research and product initiatives. This change in leadership direction follows the departure of several prominent scientists, including Bob McGrew and Barret Zoph, who left alongside Murati last autumn.

Mark Chen has been appointed as Chief Research Officer, tasked with advancing scientific progress and exploring the limits of capability and safety within AI systems. His new responsibilities include integrating research and product development more closely, aiming to expedite the introduction of new products to market. This approach has drawn criticism from former employees and industry observers who assert that OpenAI has not adequately prioritized the safety and testing of its products.

Brad Lightcap has stepped up as the Chief Operating Officer, a role in which he will oversee the daily operations of OpenAI and drive its global expansion efforts. Lightcap, who joined OpenAI in 2018 as Chief Financial Officer, has a longstanding professional relationship with Altman, dating back to their time together at Y Combinator, a prominent Silicon Valley investment firm.

Julia Villagra has been appointed as the new Chief People Officer, with a mandate to ensure that OpenAI scales effectively and becomes the preferred workplace for those aspiring to develop Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Altman noted his admiration for Villagra's understanding of the challenges faced by rapidly growing organizations.

OpenAI's primary goal remains the development of AGI--an artificial intelligence system that surpasses human intelligence and benefits all of humanity. However, the criteria for defining AGI can vary significantly. OpenAI and Microsoft have established a contract stipulating that AGI will be considered achieved when AI systems generate revenues exceeding $100 billion.
