OpenAI Introduces Instant Checkout Feature for ChatGPT

Tue 30th Sep, 2025

OpenAI has unveiled a new Instant Checkout feature for its ChatGPT platform, initially available only in the United States. This feature aims to transform ChatGPT into a central hub for online shopping, allowing users to make purchases directly within the chat interface.

Collaborating with payment processor Stripe, OpenAI has developed the Agentic Commerce Protocol, which is now available as open-source software. This protocol enables users not only to search for products but also to complete transactions seamlessly without leaving the chat environment. Similar initiatives have been adopted by platforms like Meta and TikTok, which are integrating shopping functionalities into their social media services.

According to OpenAI, the objective is to facilitate a more integrated shopping experience, stating that they are helping users to find and purchase products directly through ChatGPT. While the Agentic Commerce Protocol is available for developers and retailers to employ, merchants will incur a nominal fee for each transaction processed through ChatGPT.

The Agentic Commerce Protocol is an extension of the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which enhances website accessibility for AI agents. Traditionally, retailers curate their advertising environments on their websites, and integrating a chatbot checkout could diminish this custom experience. Presently, users in the U.S. can complete purchases for items from Etsy directly within the chat.

OpenAI describes this initiative as just the beginning. The company asserts that as AI becomes a pivotal tool for product discovery and purchasing decisions, the Agentic Commerce Protocol will serve as a foundational technology that connects consumers and businesses in the evolving landscape of commerce. Future plans include expanding the checkout capabilities beyond single-item purchases and rolling out the feature in additional regions.

While platforms like TikTok and Meta have encountered challenges with their shopping features, they provide valuable opportunities for businesses. For instance, TikTok showcases products through short videos that can be purchased immediately, while Meta's platforms enable small and medium-sized enterprises to promote their goods, with customer communication facilitated through WhatsApp.

OpenAI's approach offers retailers not only increased visibility but also a streamlined purchasing process. However, by reducing the necessity for customers to visit a retailer's website, merchants may also lose vital ongoing customer engagement opportunities. OpenAI maintains that product listings within ChatGPT are organically selected based on relevance to the user, with no paid advertisements influencing visibility.
