Record High Beer Prices at Oktoberfest: Maß Costs Up to EUR15.80

Tue 27th May, 2025

Munich - As the Oktoberfest festivities approach, attendees should prepare for a significant increase in beer prices. The city of Munich has announced that the price for a Maß (liter) of beer will range from EUR14.50 to EUR15.80 in 2025, marking an increase of 3.52% compared to the previous year. In 2024, the pricing was set between EUR13.60 and EUR15.30.

Those opting for non-alcoholic beverages will also find themselves paying more. A liter of tap water will cost approximately EUR10.95, up from EUR10.48 last year. Meanwhile, a bottle of Spezi will be priced at EUR12.48, compared to EUR12.23 in 2024, and a lemonade will set you back EUR12.11, an increase from EUR11.67.

The rising costs have sparked questions regarding the reasons behind such price hikes. According to the Munich city officials, the responsibility for setting prices lies with the festival vendors, who determine them based on various factors. The city conducts assessments to ensure that these prices remain reasonable when compared to those at other large-scale hospitality venues within Munich, where a Maß typically costs between EUR7.70 and EUR13.40.

In an effort to accommodate visitors, the Oktoberfest also introduces various fees, including a reservation fee for tables, which can be seen as a "early bird discount." However, this year, the overall cost for enjoying a couple of beers and a half chicken could reach up to EUR152, highlighting the economic reality of attending the festival.

It is essential to note that the beer served at Oktoberfest is a unique brew, containing about six percent alcohol, specifically crafted for the event. The pricing also factors in additional costs associated with setting up tents, providing live entertainment, and ensuring safety measures are in place, all of which contribute to the increased expense.

Peter Inselkammer, a spokesperson for the Oktoberfest vendors, described the price adjustments as a careful consideration of current economic conditions, emphasizing the need to provide fair wages to employees working at the festival. His colleague, Christian Schottenhamel, reiterated the commitment to supporting staff with equitable compensation.

Over the years, the price of beer at the Oktoberfest has consistently trended upwards. Since 2004, the price for a Maß has nearly doubled, reflecting broader economic changes and inflation.
