Northvolt Files for Bankruptcy Amidst Rising Debt in Sweden

Wed 12th Mar, 2025

The Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt has officially declared bankruptcy, a move that is expected to have significant repercussions for the European automotive sector. The company submitted its insolvency application to a Stockholm court, affecting all of its Swedish operations, while its German and American subsidiaries remain unaffected. Construction on the Northvolt factory in Heide, Schleswig-Holstein, is set to continue for the time being.

In a statement, Northvolt's board acknowledged the difficult decision, citing extensive efforts to explore all possible options for financial and operational viability. The company has faced numerous challenges in recent months, including escalating capital costs, geopolitical instability, and supply chain disruptions, compounded by internal issues related to ramping up production.

Once viewed as a beacon of hope for the European electric vehicle (EV) industry, Northvolt's trajectory took a downturn after a series of setbacks, including the cancellation of a multi-billion euro contract for battery cells with automotive giant BMW. These developments forced the company to reassess its strategies and led to significant financial difficulties.

In September 2024, Northvolt announced plans to lay off approximately 1,600 employees in Sweden and to suspend several expansion initiatives. Shortly thereafter, the company sought creditor protection in the United States under Chapter 11 bankruptcy regulations in a bid to shield itself from creditor claims and to chart a sustainable path forward as an independent entity. However, these efforts ultimately proved unsuccessful.

Despite the insolvency in Sweden, the Northvolt facility in Heide is not part of the bankruptcy proceedings, as it is financially independent from the parent company. The head of Northvolt Germany, Christofer Haux, emphasized the importance of the Heide site, although he acknowledged the challenging environment facing the European battery cell industry. The initial assembly of battery cells in Heide is scheduled to commence in the latter half of 2027, followed by the subsequent scaling up of production.

A spokesperson for Northvolt confirmed that the Northvolt Drei Project GmbH, an independent entity, is not included in the insolvency application and is in contact with the appointed administrator for Northvolt AB in Sweden. Operations in Germany will continue as planned.
