North Korea Tests AI-Enabled Drones Amid Military Modernization

In a significant demonstration of its advancing military capabilities, North Korea has conducted tests of artificial intelligence (AI) powered suicide drones and reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), as reported by state media outlet KCNA. The North's leader emphasized the importance of developing unmanned equipment and AI technologies to modernize its armed forces.

During the recent military inspections, Kim Jong Un evaluated upgraded reconnaissance drones designed to track targets on both land and sea. Additionally, he reviewed newly introduced airborne early-warning (AEW) aircraft that enhance North Korea's existing radar systems, particularly in navigating complex terrains.

Images published by KCNA depicted Kim examining a large four-engine aircraft, believed to be a modified Russian Il-76 cargo plane, equipped with a radar dome. This aircraft is said to improve capabilities in detecting low-flying threats, such as cruise missiles and other aircraft.

The reports indicated that North Korea has also tested attack drones, showcasing UAVs striking designated targets. These developments occurred at a drone technology facility and an electronic warfare research center, where Kim was overseeing these critical advancements.

In a related context, South Korea's national security authorities have reported that North Korean troops deployed in Russia's ongoing conflict in Ukraine are acquiring vital experience in drone warfare. It has been suggested that military collaboration between North Korea and Russia includes the exchange of weapons systems, with Russia reportedly providing anti-aircraft missiles and other defense technologies in return for North Korean military support.

Seoul has indicated that North Korea has dispatched an additional 3,000 troops to assist Russia's military efforts, following the initial deployment of around 11,000 soldiers, of which approximately 4,000 have reportedly been killed or injured during their involvement in the conflict.

This latest series of drone tests and military collaborations highlights North Korea's commitment to enhancing its technological prowess and military readiness in the face of ongoing regional tensions.
