Nintendo's Switch 2 Drives Revenue Surge as Switch 1 Prices Rise in the US

Sun 3rd Aug, 2025

Nintendo has reported a remarkable increase in revenue following the successful launch of its latest gaming console, the Switch 2. The company's financial results for the second quarter of 2025 indicate a staggering 132% rise in revenue compared to the same period last year, totaling 572 billion yen (approximately 3.35 billion euros). The net profit also saw a 19% increase year-over-year.

In a record-breaking launch, Nintendo sold 3.5 million units of the Switch 2 within the first four days of its release, marking it as the company's most successful console launch to date. However, this success comes with a downside for customers interested in the previous model, the Switch 1.

On August 3, 2025, Nintendo implemented a price increase for the Switch 1 in the United States. This price adjustment appears to be confined to the North American market, with no changes reported in other regions such as Germany. Similar price hikes were noted in Canada starting August 1, 2025.

The original Switch is now priced at $340, up from $300, while the OLED model saw an increase from $350 to $400. The compact Switch Lite's price rose from $200 to $230. Additionally, some accessories for the Switch have also experienced slight price increases.

Nintendo cited "market conditions" as the reason for these price adjustments, which may be linked to rising tariffs. Currently, the pricing for the Nintendo Switch 2, its games, and the Nintendo Online membership remains unchanged, although Nintendo has indicated that further price adjustments may occur in the future.

Industry analysts suggest that Nintendo's strategy may involve maintaining the success of the Switch 2 while adjusting prices in other product areas. The impending 20% tariff on imports from Vietnam, a crucial manufacturing location for Nintendo and the Switch 2, may have influenced the decision, according to The Verge's Andrew Webster.

As the gaming market evolves, Nintendo's pricing strategies and the performance of its new console will be closely monitored by consumers and industry experts alike.
