Recent research conducted by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has uncovered significant new insights into the relationship between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and anxiety, particularly among adolescent girls. The study highlights how these two prevalent health issues often co-occur, with distinct differences observed between genders.
Focusing specifically on the inattentive type of ADHD, which is more commonly diagnosed in girls, researchers have identified a concerning link between inattention and anxiety that appears to be unique to females. In contrast, boys are more frequently diagnosed with the hyperactive-impulsive type of ADHD, a variant that tends to present with more overt symptoms.
Professor Lars Wichstrøm from the Department of Psychology at NTNU explains that the findings indicate a reciprocal relationship between inattention and anxiety in girls. Increased levels of inattention can exacerbate anxiety symptoms during childhood and adolescence, while heightened anxiety can further worsen inattention. This connection is notably absent in boys, who instead show a correlation between hyperactivity-impulsivity and anxiety.
The implications of this research are profound, especially considering that anxiety disorders are known to escalate during adolescence, with girls being particularly vulnerable. The study suggests that early identification and intervention for inattention symptoms in girls could mitigate the development of anxiety later in life. Conversely, addressing anxiety may also help alleviate attention deficits.
Despite the known co-occurrence of ADHD and anxiety, much of this relationship remains poorly understood. Current estimates indicate that approximately 5% of children and adolescents are affected by ADHD in Norway and other nations where similar studies have been conducted.
Girls with inattentive type ADHD often go unnoticed, as they may be perceived as shy, introverted, or daydreamers rather than exhibiting disruptive behaviors. This can delay their diagnosis and subsequent access to interventions that could prevent anxiety from developing. In contrast, boys with hyperactive-impulsive type ADHD are more easily recognized due to their more visible symptoms, leading to earlier diagnosis and treatment.
Challenges faced by children, such as difficulties in basic skills, can lead to social exclusion, bullying, and other stressors that may contribute to anxiety. Wichstrøm notes that girls tend to be more sensitive to negative experiences, often responding with increased anxiety or depression compared to boys.
While the research sheds light on the differences in how ADHD and anxiety manifest in boys and girls, it also raises questions about the underlying factors that contribute to these co-occurring conditions. The study emphasizes the importance of early detection of ADHD, particularly in girls, as anxiety levels tend to rise significantly around the age of 12.
The findings point to the necessity for further investigation into the complex interplay between sex, ADHD, and anxiety. The researchers advocate for larger studies to confirm their observations and explore early signs of ADHD in girls as young as eight years old.
NTNU's observational study tracked a cohort of 1,000 children from birth through young adulthood, providing valuable longitudinal data on the development of ADHD and anxiety symptoms. As discussions surrounding ADHD diagnoses continue, Wichstrøm acknowledges the concerns about potential overdiagnosis but stresses the importance of accurately identifying and supporting those who genuinely suffer from these disorders.
