New Government Marks Fresh Start for Pharma and Chemical Industries

Wed 7th May, 2025

The recent formation of a new German government has sparked optimism among the pharmaceutical and chemical sectors. The new administration, led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, aims to rejuvenate the industries, which are viewed as crucial to the country's economic recovery.

In a historic vote, Merz secured the necessary majority in the Bundestag, with 325 members backing his candidacy for chancellor. This marked a significant moment, as it was the first time in German history that a chancellor election failed in its initial round. Following the election, the newly appointed ministers were sworn in, including Nina Warken as the Federal Minister of Health.

The pharmaceutical industry expressed relief and support for the new government, emphasizing the end of a political standstill that had persisted since the breakdown of the previous coalition last November. Dorothee Brakmann, the chief executive of Pharma Deutschland, noted that the new government's commencement would allow health policy to regain momentum.

The pharmaceutical sector is recognized as a key industry that contributes significantly to economic growth. The industry's association extended its offer of cooperation to the new government, pledging to assist in overcoming current economic and health-related challenges.

Additionally, the association representing research-based pharmaceutical companies, VFA, also committed to working alongside the new government. President Han Steutel highlighted the importance of developing the government's pharmaceutical strategy and emphasized the need for a supportive regulatory environment. He called for the elimination of bureaucratic obstacles, investment in workforce development, and initiatives to enhance Germany's competitiveness as a hub for clinical trials.

The German Chemical Industry Association (VCI) stressed the urgency of swift action from the new government. VCI's managing director, Wolfgang Große Entrup, stated that the new administration must demonstrate its commitment to an industrial reset within the first 100 days. He outlined the necessity for a reliable economic policy that would lower energy costs and boost the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors.

On the same evening of the swearing-in ceremony, Bundestag President Julia Klöckner officiated the oath of office for Merz and 17 other ministers. This marks a pivotal moment for Germany as the new government embarks on its mission to revitalize key industries and address pressing economic challenges.
