New App Requirement for Travelers to the UK Starting Wednesday

Mon 31st Mar, 2025

Beginning Wednesday, travelers from Germany will need to obtain a new electronic travel authorization (ETA) to enter the United Kingdom. This requirement applies to those without a visa and will be mandatory for flights and other forms of travel to the UK.

As of April 2, 2025, German citizens planning to visit the UK should check their email communications carefully, as the ETA must be linked to their passport. Travelers can apply for the ETA quickly through a dedicated mobile application. Currently, the application fee is approximately EUR12, but this will increase to nearly EUR20 starting April 9.

Those who attempt to travel without obtaining the ETA will face significant consequences, including being denied boarding by airlines or being turned away at immigration upon arrival.

Airlines such as Lufthansa, which operate numerous daily flights to the UK from various German airports, have indicated that they will verify the ETA during the check-in process. A spokesperson confirmed that they are implementing systematic checks and additional document verification before boarding. Lufthansa has proactively informed passengers of this new requirement through emails and at the time of online check-in, anticipating that travelers will be well-informed about the changes.

Other airlines, including EasyJet, have also communicated the necessity of the ETA to their customers in recent days. Ultimately, the final decision will rest with border authorities.

The ETA serves as an extra layer of security, and the British government expects to generate significant revenue from this initiative. When applying via the "UK ETA" app, travelers must upload a photo of their passport and, for individuals aged nine and older, a facial photograph. Additionally, applicants will need to answer several questions, such as:

  • Do you have a job?
  • Have you ever been convicted of a crime?
  • Have you been involved in or suspected of any of the following actions: war crimes, genocide, or crimes against humanity; terrorism, including support or membership in a terrorist organization; or support for extremist groups or views?

The processing time for the ETA is typically quick due to automated systems, although the British government advises that it may take up to three working days. The ETA grants authorization for multiple entries and stays of up to six months within a two-year period, making it suitable for short-term studies or other visits.
