In a striking incident from Halle, Saxony-Anhalt, a family unexpectedly left behind approximately 30 tarantulas when they vacated their apartment. These arachnids were discovered in yogurt cups, raising significant concern among local residents.

The situation came to light when officials from the veterinary office intervened to rescue the spiders, along with several neglected constrictor snakes. This revelation has been confirmed by the Bergzoo Halle, which has now taken in these creatures and provided them with a safe environment.

Zoo spokesperson Tom Bernheim reported that the tarantulas had lived under extremely poor conditions prior to their rescue, leading to their severe neglect. The Bergzoo is now showcasing these spiders in its rainforest exhibit, alongside four rescued pythons and a boa constrictor.

After their rehabilitation, the spiders have shown remarkable recovery. Staff members diligently cared for them, resulting in one tarantula growing to more than double its original size, reaching 15 centimeters. Currently, 12 of the tarantulas reside at the zoo, while others have been placed in the hands of experienced caretakers.

To accommodate the needs of these solitary creatures, the zoo constructed individual terrariums. Tarantulas can grow significantly large, with some species reaching sizes of up to 28 centimeters. Although their bites can be painful, they are not life-threatening, and female tarantulas can live as long as 25 years.

The introduction of the tarantulas has piqued the interest of many visitors, with the first curious onlookers arriving early to view the new inhabitants. The fascination with such creatures is notably prevalent in Germany, where interest in snakes and spiders continues to grow, despite a general fear surrounding them.

Moreover, some of the tarantulas are considered rare species, such as the Indian ornamental tarantula, which is regarded as highly venomous and is prohibited in several federal states. The snakes have also been provided with new enclosures within the zoo's big cat house, ensuring a comfortable and secure habitat for all.
