Nationwide seven-day incidence decreases
The seven-day incidence of new corona infections in Germany has fallen again. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), it was 1385.1 nationwide on Thursday morning, compared to 1401.0 on Wednesday and 1465.4 on Thursday of last week. The incidence quantifies the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in a seven-day period.
According to the RKI, citing data from public health authorities, the number of new infections within 24 hours on Thursday morning was 235,626 - up from 219,972 on Wednesday and 247,862 on Thursday last week. The RKI further reported that 261 additional coronavirus-related deaths were also recorded on Thursday.Since the start of the pandemic, health departments have recorded a total of 13,035,941 cases of infection, according to the RKI. The total number of registered corona deaths in Germany now stands at 120,728. The RKI puts the number of people recovered from corona illness in Germany at around 9,320,700.
In November, the federal and state governments defined the so-called hospitalization incidence as the decisive yardstick for tightening or easing the Corona measures. This value indicates how many people per 100,000 inhabitants are hospitalized within seven days due to a Corona infection. According to the latest RKI report, the hospitalization incidence nationwide was 6.04 on Wednesday, up from 6.07 a week ago.
The chairman of the German Foundation for Patient Protection, Eugen Brysch, calls for Corona measures in the nursing sector to be maintained for longer. Vulnerable populations must be protected from the coronavirus even beyond March 19, he told Editorial Network Germany. "For government measures, therefore, there is a continuing need for effective legal authorization instead of liberal actionism and the proclamation of a Freedom Day."
Brysch said, "The obligation to wear FFP2 masks, a testing regime or hygiene measures for care of the elderly and sick must not be left to private responsibility." He added that the federal and state governments still have a duty to ensure health protection for people who are unable to do so themselves. "This concerns two million outpatients and inpatients in need of care," Brysch said. "But the half-million hospital patients must not be forgotten either."
The trade union for education and science (GEW) warned against too fast Corona opening steps in schools and Kitas. GEW head Maike Finnern told Editorial Network Germany: "It is right that these institutions should also be included in social development - but this must be done with a sense of proportion in order to ensure the best possible health protection for teachers, students, children and their parents."
So far, children and adolescents have borne the brunt of the Corona pandemic, and relaxations should not be placed on their backs, Finnern said. "Since infections in schools are still well above average, masks must continue to be worn, hygiene concepts must be followed, and a reliable testing structure must be ensured for all." The installation of air filtration systems also needs to continue, he added.
