Nasal Endoscopic Surgery Shows Promising Results for Chronic Sinusitis and Nasal Polyps

Wed 7th May, 2025

Recent research indicates that nasal endoscopic surgery may offer significant advantages for patients suffering from chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps. This minimally invasive procedure is associated with shorter operation times and reduced intraoperative blood loss when compared to traditional open sinus surgery.

The study, published in BMC Surgery, involved a comparative analysis of two surgical techniques involving 160 patients diagnosed with chronic sinusitis accompanied by nasal polyps. Among these individuals, 80 underwent nasal endoscopic surgery, while the remaining 80 received traditional open sinus surgery. The researchers collected data on various factors such as surgical conditions, postoperative complications, recovery duration, and levels of postoperative pain.

The findings revealed that patients who underwent nasal endoscopic surgery had the procedure completed in a significantly shorter time frame, coupled with less intraoperative blood loss. Additionally, the overall rate of postoperative complications was lower in the endoscopic surgery group compared to the traditional surgery group. Both groups exhibited improvements in quality of life across multiple dimensions following their respective procedures.

The authors of the study concluded that nasal endoscopic surgery presents several advantages over conventional methods, including decreased operative time and fewer complications. However, they cautioned against overly simplistic comparisons, as the two surgical techniques are tailored to different surgical objectives and methodologies.
