NASA Reports Unexpected Surge in Global Sea Levels

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has revealed that global sea levels experienced a significantly larger increase in 2024 than previously anticipated. According to NASA's findings, the rise was measured at 0.59 centimeters, surpassing the forecasted 0.43 centimeters. This unexpected elevation is primarily attributed to the warming of ocean waters, which causes thermal expansion, while the contribution from melting glaciers and ice sheets was comparatively minor.

NASA's satellite data reinforces predictions that sea level rise is accelerating due to human-induced climate change. Since 1993, the global sea level has risen by a total of 10.1 centimeters, marking a concerning trend for coastal communities and ecosystems.

Experts at NASA have noted that the year 2024 was the hottest on record, leading to expanded water volumes in the oceans. Nadya Vinogradova Shiffer, a scientist at NASA, explained that the dynamics of sea level rise have shifted in recent years. In the past two decades, glacial melting accounted for approximately two-thirds of the increase, while thermal expansion contributed the remaining third. However, in 2024, this trend reversed, with thermal expansion now responsible for two-thirds of the rise.

Furthermore, it has been reported that 2024 was the first year in recorded history in which global temperatures exceeded 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. This rise in temperature has been exacerbated by the El Niño climate phenomenon. The global average temperature reached 1.6 degrees Celsius above the average recorded from 1850 to 1900. While this spike in temperature is considered an anomaly, it signals that humanity is nearing a critical threshold where the 1.5 degrees Celsius increase could become permanent, further contributing to the rise in sea levels.

The implications of rising sea levels are extensive, affecting not only coastal infrastructure but also marine ecosystems and biodiversity.
