Amidst the stunning scenery of Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean, an abandoned car has caught the attention of automotive enthusiasts and locals alike. The island, known for its pristine beaches and vibrant marine life, is now also home to a curious automotive relic that has raised questions about its origins and authenticity.
The striking red sports car, overrun by grass and weeds, sits in the capital, The Valley. Initial impressions might lead one to believe that this vehicle could be a rare Ferrari Dino 246, a model that has become a coveted collector's item. Between 1969 and 1974, Ferrari produced only about 3,000 units of this model, with a GTS special version fetching up to EUR540,000 at auction in 2021.
However, a closer examination by automotive experts has suggested that this vehicle may not be the genuine article. Instead, it appears to be a replica built on the chassis of a Pontiac Fiero, which was manufactured from 1983 to 1988. Such replicas are not uncommon, as the Fiero's mid-engine layout made it an ideal candidate for customization into other sports car designs. Despite its status as a replica, similar models have sold for between $28,000 and $45,000 at auctions.
Anguilla, with a population of approximately 14,000, is not just a paradise for beachgoers but also a haven for diverse wildlife, including turtles and iguanas. The island's unique geography has led to incidents where vehicles have been abandoned, either due to accidents or damage from severe weather events such as hurricanes.
In addition to the intriguing car, the area has also been home to the remnants of two aircraft, adding to the sense of mystery surrounding abandoned vehicles on the island. Tourists visiting Anguilla now have the opportunity to explore not only its beaches but also these fascinating automotive and aviation artifacts.
