The military government of Myanmar has reported a dramatic increase in the death toll following a powerful earthquake that struck the region. Official figures indicate that over 1,000 fatalities have been confirmed, with more than 2,300 individuals sustaining injuries from the quake, which registered a magnitude of 7.7. The seismic event occurred on Friday afternoon, approximately 16 kilometers northwest of the city of Sagaing, at a shallow depth.

Initially, the junta reported 144 deaths on Friday, but this figure rose to 694 by Saturday, indicating the scale of the disaster. The quake's tremors were felt across several neighboring countries, including Thailand, China, Cambodia, Bangladesh, and India. Shortly after the main earthquake, another tremor measuring 6.4 followed.

International assistance has begun to arrive in Myanmar, with a Chinese rescue team consisting of 37 members landing in Yangon. This team brought along medical supplies and equipment designed to detect signs of life, as highlighted in a social media post by the Chinese embassy. Additionally, Russia announced plans to send 120 experienced rescuers, along with medical personnel and search dogs, as reported by the state news agency TASS. The U.S. government has also expressed its readiness to provide aid, following communications between President Donald Trump and Myanmar officials.

In Thailand, the earthquake has resulted in at least eight confirmed deaths. Rescue operations in Bangkok are underway, focusing on a collapsed building where 117 individuals are reported missing. The Thai Meteorological Department has recorded aftershocks following the major quake, with 77 subsequent tremors predominantly occurring in Myanmar's northern regions. Most of these aftershocks were of significantly lower intensity and, in some cases, barely perceptible.

As the situation develops, normalcy is gradually returning to parts of Bangkok, with some subway lines resuming operations while others are still being inspected for damage. The earthquake has caused substantial destruction in Myanmar, leading to collapsed buildings and damaged infrastructure, including the renowned Ava Bridge near the epicenter.

The military regime has appealed to the international community for assistance as the scope of the disaster unfolds. Experts caution that the death toll may rise significantly, with the U.S. Geological Survey estimating that the total number of fatalities could eventually exceed 10,000 in Myanmar and surrounding impacted areas.
