The situation regarding the care of refugees in Germany remains critical, as municipal authorities express concerns over persistent issues. The German Association of Towns and Municipalities has called for prompt action from the federal government to alleviate these challenges.
Despite a decrease in the number of new asylum seekers, the ongoing responsibility to support those already residing in the country continues to strain local resources. Helmut Dedy, the association's chief executive, emphasized the importance of addressing the needs of existing refugees, highlighting the acute shortages of school placements, childcare facilities, and affordable housing.
Furthermore, many local foreign authorities are operating at or near their capacity, exacerbating the situation. Dedy cautioned against narrowing the focus of discussions solely to border controls and deportations, underscoring the need to maintain attention on other critical measures necessary for effective refugee integration.
The association has also pointed out the necessity for increased financial support from the federal government to assist municipalities in managing their growing integration responsibilities. Dedy remarked that the expectation to handle more integration tasks without additional funding is untenable.
In addition to financial aid, there is a pressing need for improved organization of the repatriation process for individuals who are required to leave the country but lack a perspective for staying. The association advocates for more comprehensive migration and repatriation agreements with countries of origin to facilitate these efforts.
As local governments navigate these complex challenges, the call for a more coordinated and supportive approach from the federal level becomes increasingly urgent, ensuring that municipalities can effectively uphold their commitments to those seeking refuge in Germany.
