A troubling case has emerged in Heidelberg, where a 26-year-old woman is facing allegations of deliberately making her three-year-old daughter ill. The accused reportedly injected harmful pathogens into her child's veins over the span of several weeks, leading to severe health complications for the little girl.
The proceedings began at the Heidelberg District Court, with the prosecution claiming that the mother administered injections containing disease-causing germs between June and July 2023. The result was a prolonged period during which the child suffered from high fevers and endured extensive medical examinations. The prosecution argues that the mother intended for her daughter's health to deteriorate continuously.
The woman is said to suffer from a rare psychological condition known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy, which is categorized as an emotionally unstable personality disorder. This syndrome often leads individuals, predominantly women, to inflict harm on others, typically stemming from a history of trauma or abuse in childhood. The prosecution believes that while the accused may have been aware of the wrongfulness of her actions, she lacked the ability to act differently due to her mental health condition. Authorities assert that she poses a danger to society, calling for her placement in a psychiatric facility.
According to her partner, the defendant is characterized as a strong-willed individual who is deeply committed to her children. He described their relationship, mentioning that they met while training at the same hospital. Following a brief courtship, they moved in together, but the woman had to discontinue her studies due to health issues and an unplanned pregnancy.
Medical records reveal concerning health issues with both of their daughters. The couple has a second child, born in 2021, who temporarily resided with a foster family due to health concerns linked to the mother's use of Fentanyl during pregnancy. Both infants required treatment for withdrawal symptoms. The elder daughter has experienced repeated illnesses, including high fevers and a diagnosis of tonsillitis, leading to surgical intervention.
In July 2023, as the girl was hospitalized, medical staff began suspecting the mother of Munchausen syndrome by proxy after noting that the child's recurring fevers could not be explained medically. The father, who had been unaware of these suspicions, was later instructed by hospital personnel to bring the child in for further evaluation.
After leaving the hospital, the father took their children into protective custody, moving in with his parents. Visitations with the mother have been limited and frequently canceled due to her health and staffing shortages.
The accused has refrained from commenting on the allegations. Her attorney maintains her innocence, while expert witnesses are expected to present their assessments during the trial. Testimonies from various parties, including the mother's own mother, will be heard behind closed doors to protect sensitive personal information.
The court has scheduled additional hearings, with a verdict anticipated in early June. The father expressed his belief in the mother's innocence but acknowledged that he would consider separation should she be found guilty.
