Microsoft Halts Efforts to Resolve Windows 11 24H2 Update Issues

Mon 10th Feb, 2025

Microsoft has ceased its search for an automated solution to a significant issue affecting Windows 11 24H2 installations. Users of this version are unable to install further updates when their systems are set up using installation media that includes specific update statuses. The company has confirmed that the only workaround available is a manual correction.

The problem, which came to light during the holiday season, specifically affects installations created from CDs or USB drives containing integrated updates from October or November 2024. Systems that were updated via Windows Update do not experience this issue.

In a recent update to the Windows Release Health announcements, Microsoft marked the problem as 'resolved,' but it has not provided a comprehensive fix. The current guidance indicates that affected users must perform a reinstallation using an updated installation medium that includes at least the security updates from December 2024 or later.

To create this updated installation medium, users can utilize the Windows Media Creation Tool available on Microsoft's download page for Windows 11. This tool allows users to download an ISO file for burning onto a DVD or to create a bootable USB stick, which must have a minimum capacity of 8 GB.

Once the installation media is prepared, users can initiate the installation process directly from the USB stick or DVD while their current Windows is running. By choosing the option to retain existing files, an 'in-place upgrade' occurs, allowing users to keep their installed applications functional. Affected individuals must follow this method to continue receiving security updates for their operating system.
