Microsoft Announces End of Classic Teams Client Support

Mon 12th May, 2025

Microsoft has officially declared that support for the classic Teams client will end on July 1, 2025. This decision necessitates action from IT administrators within corporate networks to ensure uninterrupted access for users during Teams meetings.

According to an announcement made in the Microsoft 365 Message Center, users of the classic Microsoft Teams client for both macOS and Windows will no longer be able to access the application after the specified date. Microsoft advises users to upgrade to the new Teams client or utilize Teams via the web to avoid service disruptions.

Starting July 1, 2025, individuals using the classic Teams client will be effectively locked out of the application, as Microsoft will implement a 'block' that prevents access to the desktop app. A notification will inform users of this change, and it will not be dismissible, emphasizing the urgency of transitioning to the updated version of Teams.

To facilitate this transition, IT administrators are encouraged to ensure that Teams clients on user devices are updated to a version that will remain functional after July 1. Microsoft is providing a script designed to help identify devices that may have issues, including those operating on unsupported systems for the new Teams client installation.

Additionally, Microsoft is offering detailed guidance outlining the upgrade process to the new Teams, including the necessary prerequisites for both macOS and Windows systems.

In related news, Microsoft is preparing to introduce a new feature in the upcoming Teams client that will prevent users from taking screenshots during meetings, aimed at enhancing privacy. However, this functionality has raised questions regarding its effectiveness, as external devices like smartphones can still capture screen content, potentially undermining the intended security measures.
