Mexico Demands Withdrawal of Controversial US Anti-Migration Ad

Tue 22nd Apr, 2025

The Mexican government has expressed outrage over a US government advertisement aimed at discouraging irregular migration. President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that her administration has formally requested several television networks to pull the ad, which they deem discriminatory. During a press conference, Sheinbaum read a letter sent to private broadcasters, highlighting that the advertisement, aired during prime time, contains messages that undermine human dignity and could incite violence against migrants.

Sheinbaum emphasized her intention to propose legislation in the Mexican Congress that would prohibit foreign governments from airing advertisements on Mexican television. The contentious advertisement is part of a multi-million dollar anti-migration campaign launched by the administration of former President Donald Trump, which was announced by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem earlier this year. The ad warns viewers, 'If you are considering entering America illegally, do not even think about it.' It further threatens that any migrant committing a crime will be pursued, asserting that 'criminals' are unwelcome in the United States.

This advertisement is just one aspect of a broader strategy by the Trump administration to address irregular immigration, which has included increased pressure on Mexico to manage migration flows and combat drug trafficking. Trump has criticized Mexico for not doing enough to curb irregular immigration and has threatened tariffs as leverage in negotiations.

In response to these pressures, President Sheinbaum has maintained a dialogue with US officials but has not ruled out imposing retaliatory tariffs. Additionally, to address US demands, she has deployed thousands of soldiers to the border with the United States.

The current diplomatic tensions highlight the complexities of migration issues in North America, particularly in the context of policy shifts and the ongoing challenges faced by migrants seeking refuge.
