Meta AI Launches in the EU: Chat-Based AI Assistant Available

Thu 20th Mar, 2025

Meta has officially introduced its AI assistant in the European Union, making it accessible via popular platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram. Initially, users will be able to interact with the assistant through chat functionalities.

With the integration of Meta AI, users will no longer need to switch between services when they have questions, whether it's about the proper article for Nutella or updates on the latest management changes at Hannover 96. The assistant is designed to provide quick answers directly within the chat environment.

While the AI assistant has been rolled out in the EU, its capabilities remain somewhat limited compared to its American counterpart. In the United States, the assistant is compatible with smart devices such as Ray-Ban smart glasses and supports voice commands. In contrast, the European version currently focuses solely on chat-based interactions.

Meta explained that the rollout in Europe faced delays due to the complex regulatory landscape. The company expressed its commitment to bringing its AI technology to European users, emphasizing that this launch is just the beginning of expanding its offerings in the region.

Users can access Meta AI through a distinctive blue icon within the various applications. In WhatsApp, the assistant can be summoned in existing group chats by typing '@Meta AI' followed by the user's query. Other platforms will require users to initiate a standalone chat to interact with the assistant, although future updates may allow for more integrated usage.

The AI assistant is equipped to assist with specific queries and can also gather content related to particular themes. For instance, users planning a trip to Canada can request the assistant to compile relevant posts and reels from friends on Instagram, streamlining their research efforts.

In the United States, users can personalize their experience with Meta AI, including features such as a built-in image generator and reminder functions. Moreover, the AI Studio allows for the creation of custom chatbots. However, it remains uncertain when these advanced features will be available in the EU, and the specific regulatory challenges hindering their implementation have not been disclosed.
