At a recent meeting of the CDU in Baden-Württemberg, Chancellor Friedrich Merz defended Germany's new migration policy, asserting that it aligns with the interests of European partners. He emphasized that those involved understand the intentions behind the policy, stating that Germany cannot continue to bear a disproportionate share of the unresolved migration challenges facing Europe.
Merz indicated that the government is implementing changes to the asylum process, including stricter border controls. He reported that early indications show a decline in the number of asylum seekers arriving in Germany. The aim, he noted, is to ensure that cities and municipalities can manage migration effectively while maintaining Germany's reputation as an open and welcoming nation.
The coalition agreement includes provisions for returning asylum seekers at the borders, a strategy that has drawn criticism from leaders in neighboring countries. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk publicly condemned the shift, suggesting it signals a unilateral approach by Germany regarding border management. Switzerland has also voiced concerns over the new policies.
During his visit to Austria, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt received support for the tightened border controls, with Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner expressing that robust checks foster stronger relationships between nations.
In addition to migration, Merz addressed pressing domestic issues, calling for comprehensive reforms in the areas of pensions, healthcare, and social security systems. He acknowledged that while the coalition agreement outlines important initiatives, more needs to be done to address demographic changes and the sustainability of social welfare.
Merz highlighted the urgency of initiating reform discussions before the summer recess, expressing optimism about the potential for bipartisan cooperation. He stated that the CDU must also focus on strengthening its presence in eastern Germany, where party representation has dwindled.
With five state elections on the horizon, Merz emphasized the need for a concerted effort to engage with voters in these regions, asserting that the CDU should not cede ground to populist movements.
On the economic front, Merz announced plans to expedite tax relief for businesses, aiming to provide clarity and stability for the German economy amidst ongoing uncertainties. He indicated intentions to finalize these measures swiftly, aligning with the goals outlined in the coalition agreement.
