Mon 21st Apr, 2025

A significant fire broke out at a large scrap yard in Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, creating a dramatic scene reminiscent of a grand bonfire. The blaze, which erupted in the early hours of Monday, has led to extensive firefighting efforts as flames and smoke billow high into the sky.

The scrap heap, measuring approximately 10,000 square meters with a height reaching 15 meters, is currently ablaze. Firefighters received their first emergency calls around 1 AM and have since mobilized a large response team. As of early morning, the fire department reported that there was no immediate end in sight for the firefighting operations.

In response to the thick smoke, residents in the Altenessen district have been notified via the NINA warning app to keep their windows and doors closed. Environmental officials are on site to conduct pollutant measurements, although initial results were not available as of this morning.

The owner of the scrap yard is actively cooperating with the firefighters, who are using heavy machinery such as excavators and loaders to separate the scrap materials for more effective extinguishing efforts. Additionally, a fireboat equipped with a powerful pump is drawing water from the Rhein-Herne Canal, utilizing a network of hoses extending over 1,500 meters to assist in dousing the flames.

Approximately 70 firefighters are engaged in combating the fire, working tirelessly to control the situation. Authorities, including local police, are also present to manage traffic and secure the surrounding roads.

This incident follows a similar fire at another scrap yard in Essen that occurred in mid-March, where a smaller pile of debris caught fire. Investigations into the cause of the current blaze are ongoing.
