A 69-year-old man has been charged with attempting to smuggle illegal drugs into the Berlin Justice Center at Moabit during a visit to an inmate. Authorities reported that the individual concealed 17 grams of methamphetamine in the sole of a shoe, which was part of a laundry delivery intended for the prisoner.

The incident occurred in early September 2024, during a routine visit. Staff at the prison discovered the drugs during a security check, leading to the immediate confiscation of the substances. In response to the findings, the Berlin public prosecutor's office has formally indicted the suspect on charges of possession and attempted distribution of narcotics in substantial quantities.

This case highlights ongoing issues with drug smuggling in correctional facilities, raising concerns about the effectiveness of security measures in place to prevent such activities. The authorities are committed to enhancing their strategies to combat the infiltration of illegal substances into prisons, ensuring the safety and security of both staff and inmates.

The accused is set to face trial at the Tiergarten District Court, where the prosecution will present evidence regarding the smuggling attempt. The legal proceedings will bring attention to the broader implications of drug trafficking and its impact on the prison system.
