Majority of Consumers Favor Labeling European Goods Amid Trade Dispute with the U.S.

Recent developments in the ongoing trade dispute between Europe and the United States have sparked a growing movement in favor of labeling products from European manufacturers. A significant survey conducted by YouGov revealed that approximately 75% of respondents in Germany support such initiatives, mirroring actions taken by several supermarket chains in Denmark.

In Denmark, supermarkets like Føtex, Netto, and Bilka have begun marking European goods with a star symbol on their price tags. This measure aims to promote products sourced from European companies as a response to the trade policies of the Trump administration.

The survey findings indicate that 47% of German consumers fully support the idea of labeling European products, while 30% are somewhat in favor. Only 11% oppose it, with another 12% choosing not to express an opinion. The YouGov study involved a representative sample of 2,055 adults aged 18 and older in Germany.

Kai Hudetz, the Managing Director of the Institute for Retail Research in Cologne, commented on the survey results, noting that feelings of anger and uncertainty among consumers are driving this trend. He highlighted that regionality has long been a significant selling point in supermarkets, a sentiment likely to be intensified by the ongoing trade tensions.

Despite the public's interest in European product labeling, major German retailers have indicated they currently do not plan to implement such measures. A spokesperson for the Rewe Group stated that the company opposes boycotts or special labeling, as these could inadvertently harm unrelated producers and businesses. According to the spokesperson, customer demand ultimately dictates the product offerings in stores.

An Edeka representative mentioned that they have received very few inquiries from customers regarding the need for additional labeling of European goods. However, they noted that if consumer interest in this issue increases, they would consider the feasibility of implementing such a labeling system.

Other chains, such as Kaufland and Lidl, have also confirmed they will not be altering their pricing displays to include European product designations. Lidl emphasized their commitment to providing customers with a wide range of regional and domestic products, complemented by selected international items.

Behind closed doors, some companies have expressed that implementing a labeling system for European goods is complex due to the vast variety of products available. Many items contain components sourced from both EU and non-EU countries, complicating the ability to clearly identify their origins. Furthermore, numerous American brands are produced within Europe, further muddling the categorization.

The introduction of product labeling in Denmark has come amidst considerable public debate over the potential boycotting of American goods, spurred by President Trump's trade policies and his controversial claims regarding Greenland.

Public sentiment in Germany indicates a willingness to boycott American products altogether. A separate YouGov survey revealed that 53% of respondents would likely refrain from purchasing U.S. products due to the trade dispute. Political motivations were cited by 48% of those surveyed as a primary reason for their decision to avoid American goods.
