Major Renovation Begins at the Pergamon Museum's South Wing

Thu 6th Mar, 2025

The Pergamon Museum, renowned as one of Germany's most visited cultural institutions, is about to enter a significant phase of its extensive renovation project. Starting next week, construction work will commence on the museum's South Wing, which houses critical artifacts including the Processional Way from Babylon and the Ishtar Gate, as confirmed by the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation.

This renovation marks the second phase of a larger initiative aimed at restoring and enhancing the museum's facilities. Visitors will still have access to the South Wing and the central area during the renovation, as these sections will remain operational throughout the extensive construction period.

The planned renovations not only involve refurbishing existing structures but also include the addition of a fourth wing to the museum, which will connect it with other buildings on Berlin's UNESCO World Heritage-listed Museum Island. Additionally, the landscaping around the museum will be reimagined in this construction phase.

Hermann Parzinger, president of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, emphasized the urgency of this renovation, noting that the building's condition has significantly deteriorated. Issues such as a leaking roof have allowed rainwater to penetrate the walls, necessitating immediate action. Over recent months, the South Wing has been cleared, with thousands of objects relocated to ensure their safety during the renovation.

In anticipation of the upcoming construction, the museum has scheduled special visitor days, allowing guests to appreciate the grand architectural features of the South Wing one last time. These slots for viewing were quickly booked, indicating a strong public interest, with many eager to see the historical displays before the renovation begins. According to the foundation, a limited number of day tickets will still be available on-site during this weekend.

Since its complete closure in autumn 2023 for the extensive renovation, the Pergamon Museum has been one of the most significant cultural venues globally, drawing millions of visitors each year. The North Wing, which features the iconic Pergamon Altar, is projected to reopen in the spring of 2027, while the entire museum is expected to welcome visitors back by 2037. The total cost for the renovation project is estimated to reach approximately 1.5 billion euros.
